THE BRAND, THE MAN, THE STORY
Donald Mirander is a bespoke, luxury womenswear designer who has been professionally designing under the name "Rednarim" since 2014, and lecturing in Fashion at the University of Technology, Jamaica since 2019 where he is, Programme Leader for Apparel Design, Production & Management. He is a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for excellence in Arts and Culture, and a Miss Jamaica World Golden Scissors awardee. His brand, Rednarim, has designed wardrobes for influential women such as Member of Parliament, and the wife of the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Hon. Juliet Holness, Olympian, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Miss Universe 2nd Runner-Up, Davina Bennett.
The story begins with the incredible women that have inspired Mirander since childhood - chiefly, Myrtle and Enid Mirander, grandmother and mother respectively. As a young boy from the rural or ‘country’ region of Jamaica, Sunday evenings in Donald's community should have been spent on a ball ground in an intense game of cricket or football. In fact, it might even be said that those evenings should have been spent anywhere else but where he actually was, in his grandmother’s living room, watching her stitch back cushions, or in the back of his mother's variety shop, listening to her process transactions, interacting with customers and otherwise managing her business. Their passion for and practice in their crafts laid the groundwork for Rednarim.
In 2020, Mirander became the first Fashion Designer from the Caribbean to receive a Chevening Award for Fashion – a scholarship which successfully earned him a Master of Arts in Fashion Business Management at the University of Westminster, London. His exposure to sustainability from his studies currently bolsters his primary area of research – sustainability in Jamaican Fashion. By, extension, this interest has birthed Foundation Rednarim, a medium that he has used to engage and educate his local community about sustainability.
To add, Mirander has also began to collaborate with other local business owners that have aligning interests. Interior Design firm in the business of custom luxury home décor pieces, Home Birchard, is now aligned with Rednarim as a sister brand. He considers this a way to improve our island's network of creatives, and in so doing, engenders another space for him to offer his expertise and experience through partnership.
